Tanzania MapTanzania covers nearly 943 000 sq km, with the Zanzibar Archipelago comprising about 2640 sq km of the total area. The mainland consists of a central highland plateau which averages between 900m and 1800m in altitude, known as the Rift Valley. The low-lying costal strip varies from 15 to 65 km with the Lake Victoria basin in the northwest. The mountain ranges are grouped in the northeast, central and southern section of the country. The largest river, the Rufiji, drains much of the southern part. Other rivers include the Ruvu, Wami, Pangani and Ruvuma.
