South Africa MapSouth Africa covers nearly 2000km from the Limpopo River in the North to Cape Agulhas in the south and in the west from Port Nolloth to Durban it is nearly 1500km. The country is mostly dry and sunny and lies south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The climate is influenced by it’s topography and surrounding oceans. Although Johannesburg and Cape Town are about 1500km apart and Johannesburg about 1700m above sea level, the average temperatures are only about 1°C higher. The country has nine provinces, Gauteng (Johannesburg& Pretoria), Limpopo (Pietersburg, now called Polokwane), Mpumalanga (Nelspruit), Free State (Bloemfontein), Kwa Zulu-Natal (Durban), Northwest, Northern Cape (Kimberley), Eastern Cape (East London) and Western Cape (Cape Town).
